제목 Biofouling control in membrane bioreactors: Bacterial quorum quenching media for enhanced mass transfer and stability
초록 Biofouling is one of the major huddles in membrane bioreactors while tackling membrane performances, energy consumption, and operating costs. Several approaches have been made to solve this issue, such as extensive air scouring, permeate backwashing, chemically enhanced backwashing, etc. None of these enabled the natural biofilm growth to stop at the membrane surface. Bacterial quorum quenchers (e.g., Rhodococcus sp. BH4), which can degrade the signal molecules (e.g., N-acyl homoserine lactones) released from bacteria in activated sludge, was recently isolated and found to be effective at disrupting biofilm formation in membrane bioreactors. This study investigates the designs and efficiencies of bio-carriers encapsulating quorum quenching bacteria for biofouling control. The mass transfer and long-term stability of the media are evaluated. Supported by National Research Foundation of Korea (No. 2016R1A2B2013776).
