In this study, styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) coatings with improved adhesion capabilities in the presence of thermally activated 6-azidosulfonylhexyl triethoxysilane (6-ASHTES) is presented. Upon heating, sulfonyl azide group in 6-ASHTES generates reactive nitrene intermediate to mediate C-H insertion reaction with SBR chains. Simultaneously, triethoxysilane group in 6-ASHTES undergoes either self-condensation reaction with other 6-ASHTES or condensation reaction with hydroxyl groups on the surface of a substrate. Characteristics of the SBR coatings are investigated through various methods, including cross-cut and scratch tests, exhibiting improved adhesion capability in comparison with that with typical peroxide crosslinking system. |
