Utilizing mixture of polymeric and monomeric surfactants in water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) double emulsions for controlled water transport and enhanced stability |

Molecular transport across the oil layer is one of the most important aspects in the design of water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) double emulsions for microcarrier applications. Herein, we employ a mixture of silicone based polymeric surfactant and library of conventional monomeric surfactants as the emulsifier to enhance the emulsion stability and control material transport. Interfacial rheology experiment results indicate that both types of surfactants exist at the interface in which interfacial anchoring of the silicone based polymeric surfactant ensures retention of the water/oil interface even under high osmotic pressure gradient and at elevated temperatures. Based on the assumption that spontaneous emulsification is the dominant molecular transport mechanism in the micron thick intermediate oil layer, we systematically investigate the effect of monomeric surfactant type and concentration on water transport rate through the oil layer. We envision that this study will provide a new perspective in the rational design of stable double emulsions with controllable transport properties for microcarriers involving relatively harsh environments. |
