UV-curable polymer/nanoclay composite layer was formed on plastic substrate in order to enhance the mechanical and optical properties. Nanoclays were modified by cationic surfactants to increase the layer spacing distance. Effects of type of cationic surfactant on nanoclay modification were investigated and modification conditions were optimized. The modified nanoclays were characterized by using X-ray diffraction, FT-IR and thermogravimetric analysis. The polymer/nanoclay composites made of highly exfoliated nanoclays showed enhanced surface hardness and barrier properties of layer due to the fully-exfoliated structure of nanoclay dispersed within the composite layer. The composite layer showed quite good optical properties, such as transparency, haze and yellowness index. |
