In this study, we used aminopropyl triethoxysilane(APS) silane coupling agent for surface modification of mesoporous silica powders. We studied effects of reaction conditions such as solvent pH, APS hydrolysis time, reaction time, and molar ratio of APS to Si-OH groups on mesoporous silica powders surfaces, on the surface modification reactions of mesoporous silica powders. The particles were firstly treated with a silane coupling agent to introduce amine groups as the growth points, and then grafting of the aromatic materials started from the modified surface. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy(NMR) techniques were used to determine the type and the degree of surface modification. We found APS reacts preferentially with Si-OH groups of the mesoporous silica powders as monomeric form at solvent pH hydrolysis time of APS from 30 mins to 90 mins, and molar ratio of APS to Si-OH groups on mesoporous silica powders surfaces |
