Recently we have interested in the aliphatic polyester ionomer or blend containing ionomer, because of their potential as degradable thermoplastics and biomaterials. However, in order to employ PLA in various fields such as films and fibers manufactured from conventional injection molding process, the control for crystallization rate would be required. In this study, the influence of an ionomers with Na, Zn, and Li ion (Surlyn®) on the crystallization, mechanical property and degradation of PLA were examined. Poly(lactic acid)(PLA) is modified by the incorporation of poly(ethylene-co-methacrylate) ionomer(Surlyn®) containnig ions such as Na, Zn, and Li ion. The content of ionomer is limited up to 7wt% of total weight. The study on crystallization behavior was performed using DSC, WAXD, and optical microscope. PLA/Surlyn® containng Zinc ion showed faster crystallization rate than that of PLA/Surlyn® with Na or Li ion. The resulting polymer exhibited improved tensile strength, depending on kinds of ion groups. Hydrolytic degradation was carried out under phosphate buffer solution at pH7 or pH10.
