Onset of significant void (OSV) is the point, where void fraction starts to increase rapidly as bubbles are released from the channel wall. In addition, onset of flow instability (OFI) is the point that pressure drop across the channel is at a minimum on the demand curve. OSV and OFI have been studied extensively over last few decades. However, it should be noted that there has been virtually no study done in connection between OSV and OFI. In this study, OFI experimental data were compared to Saha-Zuber correlation, a well known OSV prediction model. As a result, there is a linear relationship. The difference between heat flux that is measured by experiments and heat flux that is calculated from numerical algorithm is approximately 5%~50% in various experimental conditions. OFI experimental heat flux is generally larger than calculated heat flux. Therefore, Saha-Zuber correlation tends to under-predict, when it was compared with OFI experimental data. However, in conclusion, Saha-Zuber correlation can be used to predict OFI with some minor modification. |
