Nylon 6 nanohybrids with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) containing different functional groups such as alkyl and phenyl groups were prepared by the melt mixing, and the effect of the functional group on the physical behavior of the nanohybrids was investigated. In particular, nanohybrids of Nylon 6 with either aminopropylisobutyl-, aminopropylisooctyl-, or aminopropylphenyl-POSS were studied. Mechanical tests showed that the incorporation of aminopropylisobutyl- and aminopropylisooctyl-POSS induced an increase in tensile strength and modulus in comparison with the unfilled Nylon 6. By contrast, upon incorporation of aminopropylphenyl-POSS, both tensile strength and modulus were found to decrease by increasing the POSS content. It is suggested that POSS behaved as particles having a siliceous hard-core surrounded by a hydrocarbon soft-shell, which limited the stress transfer from the matrix to the core in dependence on the length of the alkyl groups. |
