Poly(lactic acid) (PLA), an important biodegradable polymer, has an ideal combination of attractive properties, such as good mechanical properties, barrier to flavor and aroma. Unfortunately, the broad substitution of commodity plastics by PLA is thwarted by its brittle behavior under impact loads. This brittleness limits its applications to those that do not require high impact resistance. To reduce brittleness of PLA, poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) was melt-blended with PLA. Miscibility of PLA/PVAc blends was investigated using DSC. A single Tg was observed for all blend compositions, which indicates that the PLA/PVAc system is a miscible one. The specific interaction between PLA and PVAc was quantified by the thermodynamic interaction energy density determined by the melting point depression method. Also thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties of PLA/PVAc blends were measured. |
