AKD emulsion consists of fatty acid as a raw material. The fatty acid might have negligible impact on emulsion stability and sizing performance. Longer shelf life and unstable condition during storage might influence the stability and performance of AKD. Therefore, it is essential to understand the stability of AKD emulsion and its effect on paper. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of unhydrolyzed- and hydrolyzed-AKD on paper properties. In addition, sizing performance of AKD emulsion was evaluated based on the type of AKD. Three kinds of AKD emulsion were hydrolyzed with different time and temperature condition, 40, 50 and 60℃ for 0, 15 and 30 days. FT-IR and 1H-NMR analysis was conducted on hydrolyzed-AKD sample. Further, the physical properties and sizing degree performance such as bulk, density, tensile index, Cobb, Stöckigt and water contact angle were evaluated. |
