Porous polystyrene (PPS) particles were synthesized through surfactant-free emulsion polymerization in the ab initio batch condition based on RAFT (reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer) polymerization. Water-soluble amphiphilic RAFT agent was synthesized from poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether and 2-(dodecylthiocarbonothioylthio)-2-methylpropionic acid (DDMAT). Styrene was copolymerized with methyl vinyl ketone (MVK) using 4,4′-azobis(4-cyanovaleric acid) (ACVA) as an initiator, and then photodegraded by UV irradiation for porous nanoparticles. PPS particles were characterized by FT-IR(Fourier transform infrared), 1H-NMR spectroscopies. GPC confirmed narrow polydispersities and the formation of narrow-distributed particles. Porous surface and morphology of particles were confirmed by SEM images. Porous PS particles are expected to be used in drug delivery system and future biomaterials. |
