Photo-control of double-stranded superhelix structures on achiral azobenzene polymer films |

Azobenzene-functionalized polymers are well-known photoresponsive materials and the photoinduction of the linear orientation and the surface relief grating has been studied on the polymer film by irradiation of polarized laser beams. In this presentation, we demonstrate that supramolecular helical orientation of azobenzene chromophores and macroscopic superhelix structures could be optically controlled on achiral and amorphous azo polymer films. The photo-induced formation process was investigated by the precise control of the polarization state and irradiation time of light. The structural properties of the superhelix, such as helix diameter, helix pitch and handedness, were controlled by the photofabrication method, and characterized by circular dichroism and atomic force microscopy. |
