Synthesis of 3-mol Yttria Stabilized Zirconia by a Combination of Sol-gel and Precipitation Method for Dental Application |

Tetragonal 3 mol% Y2O3-doped ZrO2 powder was synthesized by a combination of sol-gel and precipitation method. The Cl- ions were removed by washing the sample many times with water and ethanol. Then a power was added to methylene chloride which is immiscible with water. When water is added to this solution the Cl- ions are readily removed from the synthesized powder. Sample was then calcined at 900oC for 2hrs to obtain tetragonal phased zirconia. This sample powder was then redispersed in water containing PEG 200 to provide steric stabilization to the powder. The powder was characterized and results of both the process were compared. XRD was done to confirm the tetragonal crystal structure of zirconia. FTIR was done to confirm the presence of only zirconia in the synthesized powder. Morphology of the synthesized powder and its size was evaluated by SEM. Vickers test and 3-point bend test were done to calculate the hardness and flexural strength respectively. Finally the transparency of the synthesized powder was calculated to confirm it as a viable option for dental material. |
