제목 | Incorporation of polystyrene nanoparticles into sodium montmorillonite |
초록 | A novel alternative approach in the fabrication of highly dispersed polymer/clay nanocomposites was proposed. The incorporation of preformed polymer particles into dispersed structure of swollen sodium montmorillonite was suggested through ion exchange between inorganic cations in the interlayer space of clay and the polar ionic groups on the polymer surface. Two types of polystyrene particles with average size of approximately 40 nm prepared by emulsion polymerization (stabilized with anionic and cationic surfactant, respectively) were used for incorporation into clay gallery. The XPS analysis of hybrid showed that there existed a certain interaction between interlayer sodium ions of clay and polymer surface. Chemical states of Na ion imply that incomplete exchange of interlayer cations in the process of modifying clay occurs. This idea is consistent with the morphology of hybrid particles examined with the transmission electron microscope and characterized with X-ray diffraction. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction results of these composites show quite good dispersion of clay layers in the case of “cationic” polystyrene particles. |
