There has been interests in designing coatings with desired surface properties by using self-stratification strategy. In this study, new UV curable hyperbranched acrylates bearing perfluoroalkyl tail (PF-HBA) was synthesized via thiol-acrylate addition reaction of HBA and perfluorodecanethiol, and was incorporated into UV curable urethane acrylic resin to induce self-stratification during UV curing. The water contact angle of the UV cured film containing 3 wt% PF-HBA reached 116° without loss of optical transparency of the cured neat urethane acrylate, indicating a surface enrichment of PF-HBA as confirmed by XPS analysis. The effective self-stratification was thought to be driven by three-dimensional spherical structure, low intermolecular entanglement, low viscosity and low surface energy of PF-HBA. Mechanical properties and thermal stability of the self-stratified UV cured coatings were also examined by DMA and TGA, respectively. |
