Soft nanomaterials such as block copolymers, liquid crystals, amphiphiles and nanoparticles are essential building blocks for the emerging nano and biomaterials. When these different nano building blocks are covalently bound or physically mixed together, unusual morphologies develop due to competition of multiple organizing forces. Here I present unique self organizing behaviors observed in a model hybrid copolymer comprised of a rodlike particle and a flexible coil. The rod-coils self-assemble into hierarchical, anisotropic morphologies resulting from the interplay of liquid crystalline ordering, crystallization, microphase separation and polymer adsorption onto the substrate surface. Based on the studies, I will discuss new tethered nano building blocks of potential interest for future technology. |
