High efficiency fullerene derivatives incorporating electron-donating groups in organic photovoltaic cells |

Organic bulk-heterojunction solar cells have many advantages of low cost, light weight and potential application in flexible devices but low efficiency. Fill factor (FF), open circuit voltage (Voc) and Jsc (short circuit current) affect device efficiency in organic solar cells such as P3HT:PCBM blend system. One of possible methods for high efficiency is increasing the Voc affected by both HOMO of donor and LUMO of acceptor. Based on this principle, three analogs of PCBM were modified for changing the Voc of bulk-heterojunction solar cells via changing the LUMO level of the acceptor. In this study, we synthesized fullerene derivatives containing thiophene, thieno[3,2-b]thiophene and selenophene which could change the LUMO due to electron-donating properties. The electrochemical, optical and computational analyses of PCBM derivatives are discussed. We also investigated organic photovoltaic devices using these PCBM derivatives and measured their device performances |
