Among various organic photovoltaics, the conjugated polymer/fullerene bulk heterojunction system is one of the most promising approaches for achieving high performance of polymer photovoltaics. This approach is largely dependent upon the solid state phase morphology of the two components (donor/acceptor) in the photoactive layer because the exiton diffusion length is limited within 10 nm. However, the phase-separated domain size (~100 nm) of simple blend of polymer/fullerene is much larger than the exciton diffusion length, because the blend of conjugated polymer and fullerene derivatives usually results in macrophase separation. For the purpose to solve this problem, in this study P3HT-b-C60 diblock copolymer was synthesized and used as a compatibilizer for P3HT/PCBM blend to achieve a uniform morphology with finer domain size throughout the P3HT/PCBM heterojunction active layer. The domain size is examined as a function of the amount of compatibilizer added to the P3HT/PCBM blend. |
