Bone hemostatic activity of bilayered system composed of BCP-Gelatin electrospun mat and Chitosan hydrogel |

Several commercial products already exist for achieving soft tissue hemostasis. However, these conventional hemostats do not typically function well on bleeding bone, thus there is a need for further development of bone hemostats. In this study a topical bone hemostat composed of chitosan hydrogel and composite electrospun gelatin-BCP was fabricated, briefly characterized and tested for in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility. The composition of the said material is based on each component’s affinity for absorbing moisture and compatibility for bone regeneration. Cytocompatibility was tested using fibroblasts cells (L929 cells) and pre-osteoblasts cells (MC3t3-E1). The material’s efficiency as a hemostatic agent was tested by inducing bone bleeding on the frontal plates of rat skulls and samples were applied until hemostasis was achieved. Blood absorption was also observed and quantified by subjecting similar sized samples to 300 µL if whole blood. Blood absorption behavior was also observed using SEM microscopy. |
