One way to prevent pipe plugging due to gas hydrate formation is to inject gas hydrate inhibitors such as alcohols and salts. We investigated urea, ChCl and their extraordinary mixture which is deep eutectic solvent(DES) for both thermodynamic and kinetic hydrate inhibitors. Urea has two –NH2 groups joined by a carbonyl functional group and thus, it can form hydrogen bonds with host water molecules of gas hydrates. ChCl is a kind of ionic liquids, so it can act as hydrate inhibitors. DES is a system composed of quaternary ammonium salts with hydrogen bond donors in proper ratio. Therefore, we firstly examined their thermodynamic inhibition effects on CH4 hydrate formation by observing the hydrate equilibrium shift in the presence of urea, ChCl and DES. Then, the kinetic inhibition effects were also examined by measuring the average induction time of CH4 hydrate at an isothermal condition. In addition, the growth patterns of CH4 hydrate in the presence of these inhibitors were observed using in-situ Raman spectroscopy. The experimental results will show another way to restrain hydrate formation with viable substances which are economically reasonable and ecologically innocuous. |
