Radiation-Grafted Ion-Exchange Membrane for Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite |

Ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) is effective bending actuator with low applied voltage. Although Nafion® is commonly used for the IPMC's matrix, the limited film thickness, the actuation force and the reproducible problem are the restrictions for IPMC's matrix. New ionic polymer matrix to replace Nafion® was prepared by modification of commercial fluoropolymer. The matrix was irradiated with γ-ray and grafted with styrene and sulfonated with chlorosulfonic acid. The prepared ionic polymer has been a high ionic conductivity and good mechanical properties. The IPMCs of various thickness were manufactured by plating platinum electrode. The prepared IPMCs appeared large bending strain with 2-3V.
