제목 The effects of solvents and counter ions on the performance of the IPMCs
초록 Ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) consisting of ion-exchange membrane and metal electrode is electroactive material for bending actuation. IPMC is bent in hydrated state by applying a low voltage between two electrodes. The deformation is attributed to water drag associated with the unidirectional migration of hydrated counter cations in the membrane. Hence, the state of water and the ion conductivity may be the important factors related to IPMC actuation. And, to apply the IPMC in practical applications, it is needed to overcome definite limitation such as short constancy in dry condition and water electrolysis in matrix induced by substantial applied voltage. So, the bending actuation of IPMCs with various nonaqueous solvents as a substitute for water and various cations such as alkali metal, alkyl ammonium ions was examined. And the effects on bending behavior of solvents and counter cations in IPMC were investigated. IPMCs were prepared by using Nafion® and P(VDF-co-HFP)-g-PSSA. The state of water or nonaqueous solvent in IPMC was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The conductivity of IPMC was characterized by impedance measurement. And the actuation properties of IPMC were tested by laser displacement meter.
