Nanocellulose has a great interest for an excellent reinforcement to the biocomposites because of its remarkable mechanical properties, lightness, and biodegradability. However, nanocellulose tends to be aggregated due to the strong surface interaction between individual nanocellulose particles by the numerous hydrophilic sites, resulting in poor dispersion in the polymer matrix. In this research, to improve dispersion of nanocellulose particles, long alkyl chain which has hydrophobicity was substituted for hydrogen in hydroxyl group of nanocellulose. Dodecyl group (-C12H25) was attached to the hydroxyl group instead of the hydrogen to make an ether form. The chemical structure of dodecyl ether nanocellulose was verified. Furthermore, the reinforcing effect of dodecyl ether cellulose on the biopolymer composite was investigated.
