In an attempt to upgrade heavy oil, multi-ring aromatics consisting the major components of the heavy oil can be converted into lighter aromatics by selective ring opening (SRO) reaction. As promising materials, bi-functional catalyst of metal and zeolite has attracted much attention because the metallic (from metal element) and acidic (from zeolite element) function can promote aromatic saturation and ring opening step, respectively. For high yield toward desirable products, the balance of the metallic and acidic function plays the key role. Here, we discuss a synthetic strategy to control the acid site distribution of zeolite through silylation reaction with varying alkyl chain groups of silylation agents. Manipulating deposited SiO2 layer, the best catalytic performance of NiW-supported Bata zeolite toward the SRO reaction of 1-methylnaphthalene was achieved in a fix-bed reaction system, proving the optimal balance of metallic and acidic functions. |
