The temperature responsive smart poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) [PNIPAAm] has been exploited for a variety of biomedical applications. In this work, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide - co - dopamine methacrylamide) [P(NIPAAm-co-DMAAm)] was synthesized for a facile surface modification of silicon (Si) substrate. 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform – infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and size exclusion chromatography (SEC) confirmed the successful synthesis of P(NIPAAm-co-DMAAm). The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) was measured to be ca. 29.2°C by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Then, atomic force microscopy (AFM) was carried out to visualize the reversible phase transition of the temperature sensitive polymer bound on Si substrate by coordination bond formation. The adhesive and temperature sensitive P(NIPAAm-co-DMAAm) can be exploited as novel coating materials for various biosensing, bioimaging, drug delivery, and tissue engineering applications. |
