Perfluorinated ionomer membranes have widely been used for polymer electrolyte membrane of PEMFC, because of high proton conductivity due to the microphase separated morphology of membrane. However, these membranes are very expensive and limited in the use temperature for PEMFC. In this study , a new polymer electrolyte membrane, which is durable, lower in cost and higher in proton conductivity, is prepared. For this purpose, polysulfone-g-poly(vinylbenzyl phosphonic acid) copolymers containing different phosphonic acid content values were successfully synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. The fuel cell membranes were manufactured by solution casting method. The resulting membranes were confirmed and characterized by various analytic approaches. Finally, the possibilities of applying these membrane to DMFC applications were examined thoroughly. |
