Preparation and Characterizations of High Performance UV Curable Waterborne Polyurethane |

Waterborne polyurethanes(WPUs) are versatile environmentally friendly materials used in coatings and adhesives. However, WPUs have inferior drying rates and a slower development of adhesion compared to the conventional solventborne PUs. Such problems are resolved by proper molecular design of PU and hybridization with other polymers or inorganic fillers. We designed WPU with minimum amount of ionic group by placing them in flexible soft segment in contrast to the conventional hard segment. It was found that the dispersion was stable with less amount of water by placing the ionic group in soft segment. At the same ionic content, much finer dispersion was obtained when the ionic centers were located at soft segment. Contact angle measurement proved the surface composition of the dispersion cast film. Mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties of the cast film were also measured to evaluate the performance of the WPU films. |
