Balsamic and sulfate turpentines as raw materials for making synthetic fragrants
Two decades of Authors' studies on processing balsamic and sulfate turpentine (Polish cellulose-paper industry's waste contg. 3.8% S) are reviewed. Me mercaptan and Me'S are totally removed by heteroazeotropic (11% S) distn. with water to prep. sulfate turpentine contg. 500 ppm S only. This is vacuum-distd. to yield 95% a-pinene contg. 40-90 ppm S, which is used to make camphene. Processes for making Isobornyl acetate, isoborneol, camphor, terponecyclohexanols, alpha-terpineol, alpha-terplnyl acetate, and p-menthanol, and a 30-tonlyear pilot plant are described. 36 refs.
