The effect of preoxidation with Fenton's reagents on biodegradation of Acid Black (60 : 1) in aqueous solutions
Acid Black (60: 1) solns., 100 mg/l., were decolorized with H2O2, 2.2 mg/mg dye, in the presence of Fe(II), 10 mg/l., a pH 3 and 60 degrees C. With 3.3 mg NaOCl/mg dye, decolorization was nearly 100% at 10 mg Fe(II)/I. (not abs. necessary), pH 3, and 60 degrees C. The degradation with H2O2 was believed to fo low Fenton's mechanism, whereas with NaOCl it was a standard redox reaction. TOC and COD detd., 60-90%, confirmed the high deg. of degradation of the dye. UV-VIS spectra bore out the destruction of aromatic rings and chromophore groups. Tests on inhibition (1) of O consumption, I < 0. showed the original dye to have no destructive effect of the activated sludge. After oxidn. with H2O2 or NaOCl, consumption of O rose but slightly, owing to dye oxidates.
