The correlation between H overpotential and electrode material in connection with its electron configuration and its placement in the periodic system was discussed. Transition metals and their alloys were found the best electrode materials for H evolution from alkaline solns. The effect of the transition metal-H bond strength on the exchange current d. ("volcano curve") was presented.
