Reduction of the ammonium nitrate ability to explosion
The NH4NO3 granulate (SAG) was stabilized with (NHd(4))(2)SO4, its mixt. with (NH4)(2)HPO4, Mg(NO3)(2) and its mixt. with dolomite (0.3-1.5%) to reduce the explosivity of the SAG. The stabilizers were added to a concd. soln. of NH4NO3 at about 150 degrees C before crystn. The ability to explosion was detd. by using a steel tube test The Mg nitrate was found the most efficient stabilizer of SAG. The process was implemented under industrial scale conditions. The preliminary thermal treatment of the stabilized SAG (fivefold heating up to 50 degrees C and following cooling down to 25 degrees C) resulted in an increase in its explosivity because of a polymorphic phase change and crystal surface development at 31-34 degrees C.
