Study on esterification of benzoic acid with diethylene glycol
PhCOOH (B) was esterified with HO(CH2CH2O)(2)H (G) to PhCOO(CH2CH2O)(2) (D) under lab. conditions in presence of H2SO4, o-H3PO4, Bu4TiO4, or p-MeC6H4SO3H4 catalysts at 140 degrees C under vacuum to det kinetics of the reaction. The H2O formed in the reaction was removed by azeotropic distn. with xylene. Full conversion of G was reached under the reaction conditions but some amts. of free B still remained unconverted. The rate of reaction of B with G was more than 100 times higher than that with PhCOO(CH2CH2O)(2)H. H2SO4 was the most active catalyst.
