Modification of the synthesis of N,N'-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)urea and N,N'-bis(2-hydroxypropyl)urea
Two CO(NHCH(2)CHROH)(2) ureas, where R=H (I) or R=Me (II), were synthesized by condn. of urea with NH(2)(CH(2))(2)OH Or NH(2)CH(2)CH(Me)OH, resp., at 135 degrees C for 2 h and then at 140 degrees C for 6 h under permanent removing gaseous NH(3) The products were purified by crystn. from MeOH and identified by IR, (1)H-NMR, (13)C-NMR, mass, and UV spectra. The yields of I (m.p. 81-82 degrees C) and II (m.p. 93-94 degrees C) were 76% ad 84% by mass, resp. Other methods for substitution of urea with hydroxyalkyl groups were inefficient.
