A historical overview of the Tadeusz Reichstein process for industrial manufacture of L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is presented. The compound's characteristics, the present and future therapeutic and industrial applications of vitamin C, its biogenesis in different organisms, and perspectives for the development of new biotechnological methods for the production of L-ascorbic acid, are discussed.
