Effect of combined sizing on paper properties
A styrene-acrylate copolymer emulsion (SAE) was used optionally together with hydroxypropyl potato starch ester (1:10) for sizing the paper samples produced under lab. conditions to improve their hydrophobic properties. The use of SAE resulted in a decrease in the water absorbability of the paper, water penetration rate and the paper breaking length but also in an increase in the paper tear and breaking resistance.
