Continuous reaction crystallization of struvite under stoichiometric conditions
Struvite was produced by continuous reactive crystallization under stoichiometric conditions from dild. aq. solns. contg. phosphates(V) (concn. 0.20% by mass) in a draft tube, mixed suspension mixed product removal type crystallizer to study effect of pH (8.5-10) and mean residence time of the suspension (900-3600 s) on product crystal size distribution and homogeneity, as well as on the process kinetics. Struvite crystals of diversified homogeneity (CV 58-89%) sized 26-110 mu m were formed. The large size crystals with acceptable homogeneity were produced at pH 8.5 and prolonged mean residence time 3600 s. The struvite nucleation rate did not exceed 2.10(7) 1/(s.m(3)) while corresponding linear crystal growth rate was 4.96.10(-9) to 1.81.10(-8) m/s.
