The effect of road traffic on soil and plant contamination with lead and chromium
Pb and Cr contents in soil samples collected near 2 main roads in the Warsaw area (distance 5-200 m from the road at the depth of 0-20 cm and 80-100 cm) were analyzed by Tessier sequential method. The highest total contents of Pb and Cr (35.4 and 4.03 mg/kg, resp.) were found in the upper layer of the soil at the distance 5 m from the road. Pb in soil collected on both roads was bonded to Fe and Mn oxides while Cr to org. matter. For plants, the max. content of Pb and Cr were 1.8 mg/kg (at distance 5 m from the road) and 2.3 mg/kg (at distance 200 m from the road), resp.
