Oxidative chemical depolymerization of thermoset epoxy resin for green recycling

Carbon-fibre-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) have been widely used in many fields, which has inevitably resulted in the production of large amounts of waste composites. Therefore, the recycling of high-value carbon fibres has become a topic of great interest. Thus, herein we report the development of a method for the decomposition of the cross-linked epoxy (EP) resin of CFRPs by oxidative depolymerization under ambient pressure in the presence of a potassium permanganate (KMnO4) solution. The decomposition mechanism was also examined, and the reaction rate constant was determined to be 2.45 x 10-2 min-1 in a 1 M KMnO4 solution. In addition, the tensile strength of the reclaimed CF was 3.20 GPa, which is 90.65% the value of the virgin CF. These results indicate that our developed method is suitable for the efficient reclamation of high-quality carbon fibres from CFRP scrap.
