The degree of miniaturization established to date allows the implantation of the whole sensor system in single tread elements and thus provides the potential for research on tires close to series production. The sensor is based on a magnetic principle and is able to measure the tread element deformation in 3 dimensions. In a free-rolling tire, the flattening of the tire caused by the wheel load and the resulting kinematic stress lead to a deformation which requires part of the local friction potential.
