Sandwich structures are ideal for application as energy-absorbing railcar and bur body elements. A special sandwich design consisting of phenolic resin outer layers and a core of phenolic resin foam tied together with tubular GRP elements can be reproducibly manufactured and appears to meet high crash requirements.
