Optimization of Dental Properties of Polymeric Dental Restorative Composites Combined with Inorganic Antibacterial Agent

The preparation of antibacterial polymeric dental restorative composites was carried out using silver/zirconium-phosphoric acid(AZPA) inorganic antibacterial agent and chitosan. In order to improve the mechanical properties of dental composites, initially, the surface of fumed silica microfiller was treated with γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane. Diametral tensile strength, flexural strength, Knoop hardness, antibacterial, and antifungal properties of dental composites were investigated. The optimum concentration of AZPA was 2∼4 wt% of silica filler used based on 60 wt% of loading onto 2.2'-bis-[4-(3-methacryloxy-2-hydroxypropoxy)phenyl]propane/triethyleneglycoldimethacrylate (70/30 wt%) resin matrix. Addition of chitosan to AZPA enhanced the antibacterial properties of restorative materials.
