The first coiled-tubing-deployed ESP in the Gulf of Mexico
In February 2003, BP installed the first coiled-tubing (CT)-deployed electrical submersible pump (ESP) in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). The Grand Isle 40 Well F-1 had been producing for several years with 2 7/8-in. jointed tubing, and the two previous ESPs had lasted 16 and 30 months. Once the second ESP failed, the well was produced by gas lift at a much lower rate for 11 months until the ESP replacement could be scheduled and executed. The entire 9,700 ft of production tubing was replaced with 2 3/8-in. CT that had the ESP at bottom. When the ESP fails, a lift boat and CT unit can be mobilized sooner and at a lower cost than a rig.
