This paper introduces basic facts regarding an evaluation of the development of the synthesis of 1,5-cyclo-octadiene, the key compound in the preparation of the eight-membered ring derivatives. Both the optimal composition of the homogeneous catalytic Ni-based complex and the effect of the reaction conditions on the reaction rate and selectivity are discussed. Technological aspects such as mixing intensity, the effect of moisture in the system and the scaling-up of the synthesis are also presented.
