A Study on Separation Process Development of Fuel Grade DME
Dimethyl Ether(DME) is a clean and economical alternative fuel which can be produced from various resources such as natural gas, coal or biomass through synthesis gas(CO + H2). The properties of DME are similar to-those of LPG so that it can be mixed with LPG for various uses. An innovative separation process for the direct synthesis of DME from synthesis gas has been developed. Newly developed separation process is composed of a DME separation column and a CO2 absorption column. The DME production rate was set at 50 kg/day with purity of 99.5wt% based on computer simulation using the Aspen plus program. The CO2 separation column is designed for CO2 to be absorbed by Methanol (98 vol%). The DME purification column has been composed of a reboiler, a overhead condenser, a packed separation column, and other necessary control units. The resulted product of DME has 96.7 mole% purity. There were some discrepancies between designed values and actually obtained values beacuse of unknown factors. These unknown factors will be discovered as the steady state operation of the pilot plant is kept moving on the next step operation.
