Metallic quantum wires are a potential single-molecule detector. An electrochemical method for the production of ultra-thin Cu or Au Wires and the effect of molecular adsorption on their conductance are described, moreover, the stability of quantum wires upon adsorption is discussed. The Figure shows (schematically) the adsorption of a molecule onto the quantum nanowire.
