Polymersupported Triarylamines as Redox Catalysts in Electroorganic Synthesis - On the Way to a Redox-Active Polyelectrolyte System
Redox active triarylamine-modified polymers have been synthesized by copolymerization of diaryl-4-(1-trifluoromethylvinyl)aryl amines with either 4-vinylpyridine or styrene. In the case of 4-vinylpyridine, redox active polyelectrolytes were generated by quaternization of the pyridine-nitrogens with methyl iodide followed by an ion exchange. Thus, electrolyses can be performed without an added supporting electrolyte. Both types of polymers have been applied successfully for the indirect electrochemical oxidation of benzylic alcohol to benzaldehyde.
