On the Possibility of Synthetic Use of Radicals Generated by Electroinduced Hydrogen Abstraction
Radicals are produced by indirect reduction of a compound which cleaves to a good hydrogen atom acceptor; this acceptor abstracts a hydrogen atom from a donor, and the radical thus formed may couple with the mediator or react in other ways. Thus, on reduction of 1,4-dicyanobenzene in the presence of iodobenzene and cyclohexane, 4-cyclohexylbenzonitrile was formed in fair yield. This type of reaction requires that certain conditions are met, and the possibilities of such reactions are discussed with regard to the rates of the competing reactions.
