2 MEMBRANE COUNTERCURRENT RECYCLE CASCADES FOR GAS SEPARATION
Two membrane countercurrent recycle cascades (TMCCRCs) are proposed which incorporate both recycling and two membranes. Three types of TMCCRCs are considered - ideal, squared-off and constant recycle ratio cascades. Two membrane columns (TMCs) and three TMCCRCs are employed in separating four binary gas mixtures. It is observed that at low permselectivity ratios of two components in two membranes, the TMCCRCs outperform TMC, whereas when the ratio increases, the improvement decreases; finally leading to almost same performance at large permselectivity ratios. Simulation results indicate that the improvement of performance of TMCCRCs increases with increasing first component rich reject product composition, and also with an increase in overall cut. The squared-off TMCCRC is preferred over ideal TMCCRC if the number of stages is large, whereas ideal TMCCRC is preferred when less number of stages are required for gas separations.
