Carbon black is widely used as pigment in the coating and ink industry, and filler in rubber industry, because it has excellent properties, such as chemical and heat resistance, and electroconductivity, etc. To improve its dispersibility in polymeric systems or solvents, grafting polymer onto the carbon black surface is known to be the effective method. In this study, we report the results of grafting multihydroxyl group on the surface of acidic carbon black, characterizing its chemical structure of surface and measuring its dispersion stability. The results are discussed in terms of the chemical structure of surface as a function of pH.
