Biocomposites are emerging as a viable alternative to glass-reinforced composites due to the fact that reduction of CO2 emission for Kyoto Protocol, increase of recylability for ELV(End Life of Vehicle) regulation and reduction of car part from high oil price are highly required. The combination of bio-fibers like kenaf, hemp, flax, henequen and sisal with polymer matrixes from both non-renewable and renewable resources start to be used for automotive parts such as door trim panel and wheel cover. However, due to their low adhesion to polymer and intrinsic weak mechanical properties of natural fiber compared to glass fiber, its physical properties are inferior to inorganic filler and glass fiber. Accordingly, The development of bio-fiber surface treatment, biopolymer modification, adequate processing techniques and useful coupling agents to improve fiber-matrix adhesion is highly required. In this study, we introduce application details in automotives using biocomposites, characteristics of each natural fiber and useful process to improve physical properties of Polymer-Natural fiber composite, in addition, we provide several experimental data to enhance physical properties using several types of coupling agents and additives. |
